LNG for rail transport

Locomotive engine manufacturers are on track to make LNG the primary alternate fuel for the rail industry.

Manufacturers are developing engines that will enable the use of natural gas for locomotives. This will provide opportunities for rail operators to benefit from cost savings and emission reductions that LNG may provide their operations.

LNG is set to play a significant global role in fuelling freight locomotives over the next 20-30 years. The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) suggests that LNG will account for 35% of total freight rail energy consumption in the US by 2040.

The US is leading developments in this space with testing and trials underway with a number of different LNG powered solutions. EVOL LNG remains close to these developments where these could be deployed in Australia in locomotive applications with high fuel burn and intensive rail movements, such as in mine-to-port transport.
